Hands-On Mini Lab

EventBridge Pattern Review Lab

No resources required if done as a design exercise. Creating rules can generate small charges in busy accounts.

Goal

Reinforce Event patterns, Target routing, DLQ planning, Idempotent handling through a small, inspectable activity.

Concepts Reinforced

  • Event patterns
  • Target routing
  • DLQ planning
  • Idempotent handling

Prerequisites

  • A sample event from CloudTrail, an AWS service, or your application

Estimated Cost

Exact Steps

  1. Copy a sample event into a scratch file.
  2. Write an EventBridge event pattern that matches only the important source, detail-type, and detail fields.
  3. Use the EventBridge test pattern tool in the console or aws events test-event-pattern.
  4. Decide which target should receive matched events and what DLQ should capture failed delivery.
Runnable pattern test payload
{
  "source": ["aws.ec2"],
  "detail-type": ["EC2 Instance State-change Notification"],
  "detail": {
    "state": ["stopped"]
  }
}

Verification

  • The test event matches only when the intended fields are present.
  • A similar event with different detail values does not match.

Cleanup Steps

  • No cleanup for design-only test. Delete any temporary rules or targets if you created them.
